TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “I’ve seen lots of roles in payments and other fintech companies. Is that a good place for me to go next?”
Recommendation: with absolutely no knowledge of your work history, here’s what I’ve seen work in Fintech:
-
First, Fintech is a big umbrella term for many different types of companies including payments, investing and even debt.
-
Depending on your experience or interest, I would look at narrowing down your focus and validating which one is the best fit through networking.
-
-
Second, there is a big difference in how these companies hire for different departments.
-
If you’re aiming for a technical role, including many of the product manager roles, a background in finance isn’t as critical. If you can tell a great story and have the hard skills required, then you have a good chance.
-
For commercial roles, a background in finance will be a big part of how hiring teams make decisions on who to interview.
-
-
Finally, Fintech and many other industries have a certain flash to them as things go in and out of fashion.
-
As someone who has worked a few years in a pretty decent sized debt Fintech, the shine wears off quickly so pick a company where you believe in the product for a better long-term situation.
-
Conclusion:
There are many ways into Fintech but my most important recommendation is to find companies you believe in and are near to the customer so you’re interested long-term.
Have a great day,
Adam
