TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “I graduate my program in May but would like to get started on applying to jobs. When can I begin applying?”
Recommendation: the feeling of wanting to get started is completely reasonable, even if it is a bit early. Here’s how I’d tackle this:
-
First, there are many different aspects to a career search. Applying to roles is just one part of the overall puzzle, including networking, understanding which roles you’re a fit for, and seeing where you would want to be if nothing held you back.
-
Second, as far as applications, you can apply to some positions earlier but most will be about 1.5 months before graduation at the earliest.
-
Roles you can apply to earlier include rotational or management programs where they take batches of students.
-
As well, jobs that are on your school’s website are usually meant for students graduating around the same time as you.
-
-
Finally, given that you’re open to starting early, I would do the following:
-
Get a list of 10-20 companies that you find interesting and have offices in places you’d like to work at.
-
Reach out to people who have roles you would want at those companies. If you can, go broad and send connection requests to 20+ for each company. You have the time and making multiple connections can only benefit you at this point.
-
Find out when they hire, what the strategic goals are, and build rapport with your new connections so you in the best position possible for when applications can be sent.
-
Conclusion:
Applying too early is setting yourself up for disappointment but there are things you can do now so you’re well prepared for when the appropriate time does come.
Have a great day,
Adam
