Today’s Question: “I’ve seen a number of jobs that I applied for be re-posted by the company. What is that?”

Recommendation: this seems to be more common each day. Here’s how I’d deal with them:

• First, there are a few reasons why this may be a red flag for the company and role:

  • Companies are gathering candidate data for some reason, potentially to understand who they could hire in the future.

  • They can’t get their sh!t together and keep rejecting all the candidates, only to re-post positions over and over again hoping for someone who doesn’t exit.

  • The pay sucks and once candidates find out, at the end of the process, they reject the offer so the company needs to restart the process.

• Second, while there are a number of reasons it may not be a red flag, I usually recommend focusing on roles that haven’t been reposted.

  • While there has been a lot of competition in the market recently, there are a lot of roles in most large cities. Focus your time on the roles that don’t carry the risk.

• Finally, I must say, I’ve seen a few candidates get interviews from reposted roles.

  • This means it’s probably not a perfect strategy to never apply to them.

  • While I’ve seen a lot of interviews come from these roles, I have never seen a job come from one.

Conclusion:

While I don’t like reposted roles, partially because I don’t know the reason behind it’s reposting, keep a balanced view and find out what works for you.
