TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “everyone says networking is the best way to get a job. Is that actually true?”
Recommendation: it is commonly referred to as a one-size fits all solution to the struggle of getting a job. Here’s how I see it:
-
First, networking is clearly valuable.
-
It can result in a referral or provide useful information about the industry, company, department, or role you’re considering.
-
-
Second, it’s clearly NOT a magic solution.
-
Even if you get a referral, that doesn’t mean you’re 100% getting an interview.
-
Often, referrals come in different shapes and sizes from those where the referee is someone you met yesterday and puts your name forward to a life-long friend who talks you up to the hiring manager.
-
-
Finally, consider it a tool in your belt.
-
Start by using what you’re best at and go from there. If networking comes naturally, then use it as much as you can.
-
If networking doesn’t come naturally, a good starting strategy is to reach out to a few people at a job for each application you’re a fantastic fit for. You can get referrals after you apply and it fits nicely into a simple application process or strategy.
-
Conclusion:
At the end of the day, you have many tools or strategies that can get you to a job offer. Networking is a value add to many candidates but it’s neither required nor perfect.
Have a great day,
Adam
