• First, I would ask why you think you’re not progressing. Here are a few questions I’d ask:

  • How confident are you in talking about the technical side of the roles including specific tools or software?

  • When asked to describe a story or experience in your past, how do you feel about the flow, structure, and general strength of your answers?

• Second, if you’re struggling to discuss the technical parts of the role, I would consider whether you’re applying for the right roles or if you just need to brush up on specific competencies you haven’t used or discussed in a while.

  • Often, a company will get really specific on questions about a tool or software they use, wanting their new hire to be confident they can work with it on day 1.

  • If this has been your experience, figure out the few tools that are common or mentioned in the job description and write a cheat sheet you would give to someone who was new to a role where this was a required skill.

• Finally, if you feel you can talk about the technical skills, it may be worth reviewing your stories.
