TODAY’S QUESTION
Hong asks, “I heard so much in the last few years about roles going remote but I don’t find very many online and the ones that do exist have so much competition. Is there something I’m missing?”
Recommendation: working with candidates all over the world, here’s what I’ve seen in regards to the remote roles:
-
First, I completely agree with you. I was expecting more remote roles to be made available given the improvement in technology and the ability for office jobs to keep going through Covid.
-
The jobs I do see open up that are fully remote have unspeakable number of applicants meaning competition is even more fierce than usual.
-
-
Second, I’ve found that most of the candidates I work with get jobs that end up being a hybrid. The fully remote move seemed to never be something which management wanted or was comfortable with. I guess without employees in an office, their job doesn’t sound as necessary (shoulders shrugging).
-
Depending on what you’re looking for, a hybrid role is a pretty good mix of the remote and in-person working types.
-
-
Finally, I believe that remote only roles are mostly applied to by people who live very far away (think different continent).
-
This means that the actual number of somewhat relevant candidates is probably much smaller than is shown on the job advertisement, making it less competitive than it seems.
-
Conclusion:
The overall conclusion is that if you see a role you’re a good fit for, apply no matter how many applicants it says have clicked the link. Also, hybrid roles are a better fit for most people anyways, given the ability for employees to grow and connect with others in the office.
