TODAY’S QUESTION
Natasha asks, “My background is in Sales but I want to change to anything but Sales. Do you have any tips on where I could go?”
Recommendation: I went through a similar path and have seen others find their way through the same transition. Here is how I would do it:
-
First, map out your most recent role and think of things that you wouldn’t mind or would even like as part of the next role.
-
Think industry, technology, location, seniority, type of work (agile for example), and even department. What would you keep if it helped you change roles?
-
-
Second, consider that sales is quite different when you change industries, companies, products, or even just teams.
-
Some ideas include looking at account management or relationships management roles, where you can use your sales experience but live in a less competitive, more collaborative role.
-
-
Finally, use the skills from your time in sales in your job search. Whichever skills you have, use them to your advantage.
-
If you’re from a sales background, I would lean more on networking and going to events rather than cold applications. There’s always a balance between but you may get more out of the networking.
-
Conclusion:
You’ve got a great advantage coming from sales. Interviews don’t come easy to nearly anyone at the moment but you’ll have an advantage in telling your story and getting people to support you.
